Here are some of the questions we often receive…

What are the dryer warning signs?

  • Clothes are still damp after a normal drying cycle

  • Clothes come out hotter than usual

  • Dryer feels hot to the touch

  • You may hear a series of clicks as the dryer control repeatedly turns the heat on and off, trying to compensate for the problem

  • Large amounts of lint accumulate in the lint trap during a single load

  • Moldy smell

  • Excess pet hair on your clothing

  • Your dryer vent has never been cleaned

Why do dryer vents need to be cleaned?

Dryer ducts become blocked by buildup of lint and require an open pathway to ensure hot air, moisture and gasses are properly exhausted. Lint blockage restricts this pathway, wasting energy. Blockage like this in gas dryers can even result in carbon monoxide poisoning.

Is my dryer at risk?

All dryers are at risk if they are not cleaned by a professional. Dryers located further from outside walls or on upper floors create significantly longer paths for the lint to travel. These dryers are at greater risk for lint buildup and fire hazard.

It’s good practice to check or feel the exhaust air (outside) while the dryer is running - even if your clothes are drying completely.

What causes a clogged dryer vent?

Dryer lint traps only collect 30% of your clothing lint. The rest is moving through your duct work and may cause a buildup of lint, especially if your dryer is located a distance from the outside vent.

How often should I clean my dryer vent?

Leading appliance manufacturers recommend that dryer vents should be professionally cleaned once a year to prevent fire and other hazards to your health and property.

I clean my lint trap. Why do I need a professional?

Lint and dust not only collect on the lint trap, but also within the dryer chassis, around the dryer, and in the ducts that carry the lint from the dryer to outside.

Will duct cleaning shorten my drying time?

If your dryer has a clogged duct, it can take upwards of three times longer to dry clothes. Professional duct cleaning can significantly reduce utility bills and prevent future dryer repairs.

What I do to minimize fire risk?

  • Clean the lint traps of every machine before or after every load.

  • Don’t use fabric softener sheets. They create a chemical film buildup.

  • Where practical, replace plastic and foil flexible style ducts behind dryers with semi-rigid or smooth aluminum ducts.

  • Regularly clean out lint and dust behind and around dryers.
